Literacy Week

From the 18th to the 22nd of October, EIS celebrated its annual Literacy Week. By engaging in a myriad of activities, students had the opportunity to explore both literacy and literature. The eventful week saw sessions like Unconventional Careers (learning about atypical professions from experts), movie screenings in foreign languages, Know Your Rights (a session that explored the Indian constitution and our rights), storytelling in Marathi, online carnival, Short Film Screening (contemplating how global issues affect us despite our privileged backgrounds), and Living Library (wherein the founder of an educational NGO conversed with the students about the significance of education). Competitions like slam poetry, esports, Directorial Debut (filmmaking), poetry writing and recitation, digital treasure hunt, poetry recitation in a second language, arts, and spelling bee also kept the students on their toes.

The EIS Literacy week is an embodiment of our school’s mission and values – it prompts students to embrace and inculcate a deep sense of personal and cultural identity rooted in international mindedness, and promotes happiness, positivity, and urges students to undertake social responsibility. These events (organized by DP students and the English department in collaboration with the language department and the librarians) allowed students to develop literary, artistic, collaborative, and thinking skills. Taking part in competitions pushed students to come up with creative ideas together. Discussing or listening to others talk about their art helped inculcate an appreciation for literary arts. The week also served as a means to sensitize students: through these sessions, students realized the importance of a high-quality education among other issues of global significance. The students involved in the organization of the sessions also developed their self-management, communication and leadership skills during the process of planning and conducting such a large-scale event.

Overall, literacy week was an enjoyable experience for students to have fun while developing their skills and awareness of the world around them.
