For MYP2’s unit-linked service in English, students engaged with the many global conflicts in the current international landscape. Through research, they worked on developing international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding. Creating infographics and informative presentations, the students did a schoolwide presentation in order to raise awareness of the causes, consequences and impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War, the Syrian Civil War, the Sudan Civil War and the US-Afghanistan War. Here are a few examples:
This tied into their broader focus of the unit on UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: ‘Peace Justice and Strong Institutions.’
Students also highlighted refugee voices from the four conflicts, creating found poems to showcase the lives, stories and concerns of refugees.
A few student reflections:
“This helped me become more caring because I understood what other people are going through and the hard time that they are surviving. This also helped me become more globally minded because i was learning about “global conflicts” and what is happening around the world.”
-Amaira Jhaveri
“There weren’t any specific challenges that we faced because we all were balanced with our work and did everything correctly. I did face challenges in researching about the facts, most of it the population. Not all sites were giving results that can be trusted. That took some time to find out, but rest was okay.”
-Vansika Shah
“I improved my communication skills by communicating with my friends and group members. I also improved my research skills by researching for stuff to put on the slide. I think that these ATL skills need a bit more practicing to perfect.”
-Mahir Jain
Through their work on this project, the students were able to gain a deep understanding of the issues and concerns surrounding these global conflicts and develop their knowledge and caring towards others.
