Pioneering with an MYP Class Led assembly for the academic year, MYP1 students took center stage by hosting a ‘Board Game Bonanza’ for their peers from MYP2, 3 and 4 on October 7, 2024. MYP1 students took up the role of game masters, engaging their peers in novel and unique board games designed and curated by themselves in the course of their Design sessions. The event was a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration and problem-solving as our budding designers shared their innovations with all.
Prior to the assembly, MYP1 students worked in their respective teams to ensure that they had their physical board game ready along with the needed items, making it easier and more effective for the players. The room was transformed into an interactive showcase, with each team hosting their own station. Tables were carefully arranged to display the board games, complete with colorful posters, game pieces, and eye-catching instructions with enough space for players to gather and move around comfortably and fully immerse themselves in the gaming experience.
Each board game was a testimony of hard work and effort put in by the students, conceptualized and built from scratch. They explored themes ranging from adventure and pop culture to challenges that would lead to rewards. MYP1 students confidently showcased their games by explaining rules with clarity, sharing their design process and inviting their audience to join in the fun. MYP2,3 and 4 students were encouraged to provide valuable feedback on their experience, allowing the hosts an opportunity to learn and grow from this opportunity.
The assembly provided a platform for MYP1 students to present their work to a larger audience by building on their confidence and communication skills. This experience also reinforced the significance of collaboration and perseverance. From brainstorming ideas to prototyping and testing, the students worked as teams with learning to navigate challenges, respect diverse perspectives and celebrate shared successes.
The ‘Board Game Bonanza’ allowed students to develop a sense of pride and ownership in their achievements. Conducting their games for other grades gave them the satisfaction of seeing their hard work appreciated and enjoyed by others. By taking on leadership roles, they inspired their peers, serving as role models and showcasing new horizons of gaming through creativity and dedication.
This assembly served as an example to reiterate the importance of breaking the monotony of presentation heavy assemblies by reminding everyone that learning can be achieved through play. This memorable assembly highlighted how essential collaboration is, leaving everyone excited for what our young minds will achieve next!
